This month I began talks with my (live-in) filmmaker about the ideas and motivations behind my Dance on Film. He has offered a few sources of inspiration which act as a mood board or visual reference. I look forward to shooting some material as early as next week but in the meantime, I’ll share this mood board and a short paragraph describing the direction I’m moving in.
Natural settings for traditional arts have been decimated due to the pandemic, drawing musicians and dancers to online platforms. Just like the old days all dancing now takes place at home in bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms but without an audience or the keen eye of a tutor. What does it mean to dance for yourself? Does it even exist without eyes to see it? I believe it does and I’d like to look closer.
I'm fascinated by the home or surrounding area as a setting for my dance on film. This will be mixed in with an interview in my living room where I discuss pivotal dancing moments in my life. We will shoot some movement on an old VHS style exploring the past as well as sharing some old archive footage.
